Coinbase is entering the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) market with a new digital pack-opening service. Announced via a tweet on September 28, the platform will allow users to open digital packs that are backed by real, physical cards. Users will have the choice to keep their cards in a digital vault or have the physical cards shipped to them.
While the announcement does not explicitly name Pokémon, an accompanying image displays mockups of five digital Pokémon TCG packs. Coinbase has also responded to user comments mentioning the franchise, with one reply stating, "You get it," in response to a comment about "Pokémon packs on the chain." Another response hinted at additional features, stating, "And there’s more…"
Details regarding the integration of cryptocurrency, card grading, and proof of ownership remain scarce. It is unclear if the digital pulls will originate from pre-opened physical packs.
This service mirrors aspects of GameStop's Power Packs program, which also offers a digital option for opening TCG packs and receiving the physical cards. GameStop assures that its packs contain authenticated items and provides options for vaulting, shipping, or an instant buyback program. It remains to be seen if Coinbase will offer similar assurances.
Coinbase's move into the TCG space occurs amid heightened interest in the Pokémon TCG, amplified by the franchise's 30th Anniversary. This period has also seen increased attention on scalping and issues surrounding the distribution of special merchandise and card releases, leading to significant queues and controversy at retail outlets.
