Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand, a standalone spin-off from Relic Entertainment, reimagines the series' core real-time strategy mechanics within a roguelite horde mode. The new format challenges players to survive twelve increasingly difficult waves of enemy forces, with the ultimate goal of protecting their headquarters.

Each game begins with a limited roster of units, forcing players to make difficult tactical decisions from the outset. As waves are survived, players are presented with choices for new unit types, passive upgrades, or active abilities. This system ensures that each playthrough offers a unique strategic experience, with player-assembled forces evolving dynamically based on the "cards" drawn from the randomized upgrade system. For instance, one game might focus on fast-moving assault trucks, while another might emphasize heavily reinforced infantry.

Evolving Threats and Strategic Adaptation

While the roster of available units and upgrades is randomized, the enemy's composition is not entirely arbitrary. Lead designer Ross Cockburn explained that the AI attempts to establish and maintain trends in unit types throughout a run, rather than randomly selecting opponents. This layered approach, he noted, allows players to better learn from the AI's actions and develop counter-strategies. "It's hard to learn from what the AI is doing and build a roster and a strategy that is going to work for you," Cockburn stated, highlighting the deliberate design behind the enemy wave generation.

Adding to the unpredictability are dynamic events, which game director Eric Wrobel described as introducing "random craziness." These can include strafing runs from the Luftwaffe, phosphorus airdrops, or assaults by Goliath demolition vehicles. While these events can occur repeatedly, they are designed to disrupt player strategies and force adaptation. Wrobel clarified that the AI is not specifically countering player builds but rather presenting unpredictable challenges. "From wave to wave, there's actually more random craziness happening with these events," Wrobel said.

Persistent Progression and Faction Upgrades

Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand features a persistent upgrade system through perk points, which can be spent on permanent faction enhancements between matches. With four distinct factions—British, Americans, Wehrmacht, and Afrikakorps—each possessing its own perk tree, players can gradually unlock new abilities and stat boosts. While many perks offer subtle statistical improvements, such as increased unit health or faster repair times, others introduce more tangible changes, like adding defensive capabilities to otherwise vulnerable outpost structures.

Game director Eric Wrobel noted that while highly skilled players might overcome the highest difficulty levels with a partially unlocked perk tree, most players will benefit from fully exploring their chosen faction's progression. "If you're not a really top-level player, you can unlock the whole [perk tree] and be able to tackle those high difficulties," he explained.

A Familiar Yet Fresh Experience

Despite the roguelite structure, the core mechanics that have defined the Company of Heroes series for two decades remain central to Final Stand. Concepts like cover and suppression take on renewed significance as players must constantly reposition troops to counter enemy advances from varied entry points. Even smaller mechanics, such as the ability to pick up discarded enemy weapons, find new utility in the horde mode, allowing players to adapt to specific threats on the fly, such as utilizing an enemy flamethrower against incoming infantry.

While the full extent of Final Stand's content is still being explored, the developer has indicated that the mode is highly expandable. Wrobel stated that future updates could introduce new bosses, units, and technologies, further diversifying the gameplay experience. "The mode is super expandable," Wrobel commented. "We can drop in new bosses, we can drop in new units, we can do new tech, too, for the player as well."

Though not a complete playthrough, the time spent with Final Stand has reportedly instilled a new appreciation for the Company of Heroes franchise, suggesting a successful reinvention for the series' venerable mechanics. The roguelite spin offers a compelling loop of challenge, adaptation, and progression, breathing new life into established gameplay systems.
