Compulsion Games, the studio behind the BAFTA and Peabody Award-winning title South of Midnight, has announced it is seeking new opportunities for collaboration following its recent return to independence from Xbox. The studio revealed in a LinkedIn post that it is "expanding opportunities to collaborate with studios across the games and entertainment industry."
Compulsion is inviting potential partners to leverage its team's talent and creativity, highlighting its experience in developing acclaimed original intellectual property. The studio emphasized its artistry, technical expertise, and collaborative approach, aiming to contribute to the creation of memorable player experiences. "We are excited to support the development of memorable experiences that engage and entertain players around the world," the studio stated.
The studio's message comes a week after Microsoft's latest round of layoffs, which saw Compulsion become an independent entity once more. While Microsoft has been commended for allowing Compulsion to regain independence rather than closing the studio outright, concerns have been raised about the studio's future in the current challenging game industry landscape. The studio had previously been acquired by Xbox in 2018.
South of Midnight received significant critical praise, earning a BAFTA Award, a Peabody Award, seven Canadian Game Awards, and appearing on multiple 'Best Games of 2025' lists. It also won the Games for Impact award at the 2025 Game Awards. Despite this critical acclaim, the game was not a major commercial success, and this was reportedly a factor in the studio's separation from Xbox.
Compulsion Games originally started in 2009 as a support studio, providing services to other game developers. This move back towards its foundational business model is not entirely unfamiliar territory for the team, though the current industry environment, marked by widespread layoffs and studio closures, presents a more constrained landscape than when the studio first began offering its services. Reports indicate that several Compulsion employees had begun seeking new employment opportunities prior to the recent announcement, reportedly with the studio leadership's approval.
