Chickens Come Home to Roost
Players can now receive eggs as part of their weekly drops, which will eventually hatch into chicks. These pets mature into adult chickens of various breeds, such as regular, Polish, or Silkie, and come in multiple colors. While these companions can be named and displayed on the loadout screen, they are entirely untradeable, meaning they cannot be integrated into Counter-Strike 2's skin market. The chickens will eventually leave players once they are fully grown, prompting the acquisition of a new pet.
Player Reception and Game Trends
While some players appreciate the addition of a new companion, the mechanic requires regular engagement to prevent the pet from leaving. Some community members have expressed cynicism, suggesting the feature is a response to perceived declining player numbers. Counter-Strike 2 remains a highly popular game on Steam, but its peak player count recently saw a dip to its lowest point since January 2024. Many players have cited concerns about cheating as a primary issue impacting the game's player retention, with the new chicken pets unlikely to address these more systemic problems.
The update also includes the new Rush Hour game mode, described as a fast-paced 3v3 experience. Counter-Strike 2 is available for free on SteamOS and Windows PC.
