Netflix and Sega have announced a broad collaboration that will bring several of the game publisher's popular franchises to screen, including a feature film adaptation of the iconic arcade racer Crazy Taxi. The deal also includes a new animated series based on Sonic the Hedgehog and a live-action film adaptation of RGG Studio's upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven.
Sega's Beloved Franchises Headed to Netflix
The Crazy Taxi movie will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who previously worked on the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, who have all been involved with the recent Sonic the Hedgehog films, are attached to the project. The film is currently slated for a 2027 release.
The Sonic the Hedgehog animated series is being developed with Carlos Stevens, known for his work on Love, Death & Robots. Targeted at an upper pre-school audience, the show is described as a comedic, yet emotionally grounded series designed for children who appreciate a bit of edge and wish fulfillment. Toru Nakahara will also produce this series.
In addition to these projects, Netflix will produce a live-action film adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven, the forthcoming game from Yakuza developer RGG Studio. Toru Nakahara is also set to produce this movie, which aims to offer a new perspective on the game's world and franchise.
Creative Vision for Sega Adaptations
Sega's Head Producer, Toru Nakahara, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming slate, promising distinct tones for each adaptation. He stated that fans can expect "something cute yet cool for Sonic, hilariously crazy for Crazy Taxi, and a badass action drama for Stranger Than Heaven." Nakahara, who has a track record producing Sega's recent adaptations like the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the Knuckles miniseries, emphasized the team's excitement and the wealth of creative ideas in development.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, highlighted the inherent strengths of Sega's properties. He noted that successful games already possess beloved characters, familiar worlds, and dedicated fanbases. Riegg added that this collaboration allows Netflix to explore different eras of Sega's catalog, celebrating existing fan appeal while introducing these franchises to new audiences.
A Note on Crazy Taxi: World Tour
The Crazy Taxi film's upcoming release coincides with the planned launch of the new game, Crazy Taxi World Tour, next year. However, the game's return has been somewhat overshadowed by controversy regarding its use of AI-generated content. According to its Steam description, generative AI was utilized in the ideation process for background objects, though no AI-generated content will be featured in the final game. It remains to be seen if the film adaptation will navigate similar discussions surrounding AI technology.
