Despite a long history with the franchise, an early hands-on with Crazy Taxi: World Tour at Gamescom left reviewer Alex Wiltshire of PC Gamer feeling underwhelmed. While the core time-attack gameplay of picking up and dropping off passengers remains, the newly introduced side quests and challenges, such as delivering pizzas or performing stunts for an adrenaline junkie, were highlights of the demo. However, these additions couldn't entirely compensate for what was perceived as a lack of fun in the core driving experience.

Handling and Presentation Concerns

The game's drifting mechanics were described as lacking impact, and the vehicle handling felt significantly tighter and less forgiving than the original Crazy Taxi titles. This tighter control, while perhaps aiming for a more modern feel, was seen as detrimental to the series' signature chaotic energy.

Visually, Crazy Taxi: World Tour was criticized for an "awfully cheap quality" and a lack of distinct identity, evoking the impression of significant generative AI involvement in its conceptualization. While the game features iconic elements like The Offspring's music, real-world brands, and the character Axel's distinctive hairstyle, these are wrapped in what the reviewer called a "sauceless presentation." Even impressive recreations of real-world landmarks, such as Cologne's cathedral, could not elevate the overall aesthetic.

The demo provided access to a Germany-themed map, which is expected to be representative of the five cities planned for the full release. Players can still find passengers by stopping near them, initiating the familiar pick-up and drop-off sequence. Challenges are presented with a star rating system, rewarding better performance with higher scores.

While the reviewer expressed a desire to enjoy the game and appreciate its attempts to bring real-world locations to life, the overall experience with the Crazy Taxi: World Tour demo did not inspire enthusiasm for a return to the driver's seat. The game is slated to include five cities in its final release, but the current iteration has failed to generate significant excitement for its upcoming launch.
