Pearl Abyss has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming DLC "Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown," showcasing a dramatic shift in tone and gameplay elements. The expansion, slated for release on October 15, appears to blend steampunk aesthetics, piracy, and even futuristic robotic combat within the RPG's established world.
The trailer begins by hinting at a mysterious "hidden land" beyond the titular crimson desert, where ancient evils are said to be stirring. However, the tone quickly shifts to a more eclectic presentation. Players will seemingly be able to engage in activities such as building houses, proposing marriage, and even donning early 20th-century scuba gear equipped with a jetpack for underwater exploration.
Further scenes depict characters becoming pirates, riding dragons, and a figure running across water. The expansion also introduces animal-themed mechs, including a dragon, a squid, and a crab capable of firing laser beams. The trailer also shows a colossal metal boat and hints at temporal or spatial distortions, which could explain the juxtaposition of medieval cityscapes, galleons, and advanced robotics. This surreal medley has led to speculation that the DLC might lean into the game's already established penchant for unexpected and eccentric content.
"Reclaim power and reach beyond—into the unknown," reads the DLC's synopsis. "The story of Pywel continues in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown as Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane set out to discover their purpose and shape their futures. However, as turmoil unfolds around them, each must fight to forge a path through the trials ahead. Join them on a new adventure and discover what new possibilities await across Pywel."
The early 20th-century scuba diving gear is being offered as a pre-order bonus.
