Crimson Desert Exec Addresses Discrepancy Between Reviews and Sales

Despite launching to middling reviews, Crimson Desert has achieved significant commercial success, with 7 million sales to date. Pearl Abyss Europe CEO Lybee Park recently addressed the apparent gap between critical reception and player engagement, suggesting that reviewers may not have experienced the game in its optimal, final state.

Park explained to The Game Business Show that critics were provided with builds that differed from the final launch version. While reviewers had ample time to play, some logging over 100 hours, they were not playing the exact same game that players experienced on day one. This difference is attributed to the common industry practice of "coming in hot," where significant tweaks and optimizations are still being implemented by developers leading up to and even during the review period.

Furthermore, Park noted that the unique charm of Crimson Desert is spread throughout its expansive in-game world, with many subtle details that may have been missed during the limited time reviewers had to explore before delivering their assessments. Critics typically follow the main story, but the game's appeal, according to Park, lies in its discoverable world.

Crimson Desert received a day-one patch, followed by a substantial update within its first week. This subsequent update included major overhauls to several game systems, notably addressing inventory limitations that had been a source of frustration for many reviewers. By the end of its first month, the game had evolved considerably from the version some critics had invested significant time in.

This evolution helps explain the disparity between the game's Metacritic score of 77 and its impressive sales figures. Park also acknowledged that player reception is not a sole determinant of a game's quality, drawing a parallel to box office performance for films, where commercial success does not always equate to critical acclaim. High sales figures, as seen with titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, do not necessarily indicate superior quality.

Pearl Abyss continues to refine Crimson Desert, with the upcoming "Charting the Unknown" DLC scheduled for release on October 29, signaling ongoing development and support for the sprawling open-world title.
