A new installment in the popular Critical Role series is set to explore the continuing adventures of The Mighty Nein, focusing on the characters Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett. Titled Critical Role: The Mighty Nein - Children of the Empire, the novel is penned by Hugo, Ignyte, and Nebula Award nominee Nibedita Sen and will be published by Random House Worlds.
The story is set between Campaign 2 and Campaign 3 of Critical Role and follows Caleb and Beau as they confront their past by returning to an empire they once called home. Caleb will investigate the Cerberus Assembly and Ludinus Da’leth, an undertaking that could force him to betray allies. Beauregard, meanwhile, joins him, seeking a distraction from her personal life with her partner, Yasha.
An exclusive excerpt from the novel highlights a sparring session between Beau and Yasha, showcasing their deep bond and Beau's internal struggles with settling into domesticity after years of adventuring. Yasha reassures Beau of her worth and encourages her to embrace her happiness.
During their sparring, Beau grapples with the feeling that she might be "too much" for Yasha, but Yasha's unwavering support and affection help Beau confront these insecurities. The scene culminates in a tender moment where Beau proposes marriage to Yasha, to which Yasha happily accepts.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein - Children of the Empire is scheduled for release on November 10.
