Critical Role has revealed the first trailer for its upcoming tabletop role-playing miniseries, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands. This new Daggerheart series presents a chilling, gothic narrative with an aesthetic described as reminiscent of Elden Ring. The trailer was exclusively shared with Polygon and offers a glimpse into the perilous Halcyon Domain.
The series focuses on five adventurers: Sister, Dillwyn and companion Badger, Caguama, Alphonse, and Mercy. These characters are played by Critical Role co-founders Laura Bailey and Jennifer English, alongside Abubakar Salim, Vico Ortiz, and Zachery Renauldo. Matthew Mercer, stepping back from his usual Dungeon Master role in Campaign 4, will guide the players through this new Daggerheart miniseries.
Age of Umbra: Sallowlands is set in the Halcyon Domain, a world that has fallen from a once-glorious celestial landscape into decay and despair. The gods are absent, communities are fractured, and hope is dwindling. A significant threat arises from the undead, who are reborn as twisted nightmares, spreading destruction. Amidst this bleakness, a rumor of a distant, life-filled metropolis offers a beacon of salvation for the survivors.
According to the Daggerheart website, players will navigate a dark and emotional actual play experience, confronting brutal adversaries and high stakes. The narrative will explore themes of desperation, survival, and love in the face of overwhelming odds. While violence is expected in this grim fantasy setting, Critical Role is known for weaving stories of hope amidst darkness. The first episode of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands is set to premiere on July 9.
