Crunchyroll Announces Major Webtoon Anime Adaptations and Video Game Series at NYCC

The streaming giant revealed a slate of new projects including anime based on "Sekiro" and "Ghost of Tsushima," alongside a significant partnership with webtoon platforms.

Crunchyroll Announces Major Webtoon Anime Adaptations and Video Game Series at NYCC

New York Comic Con 2026 saw Crunchyroll unveil an extensive lineup of upcoming anime projects, including a significant new partnership aimed at adapting popular webtoons into animated series. The streaming service also offered sneak peeks at anime adaptations of major video game titles.

Crunchyroll's Webtoon Initiative

A central announcement was Crunchyroll's collaboration with Hayate, Aniplex, and Line Digital Frontier Corporation to develop anime based on approximately 15 webtoons. These series will be sourced from Line Digital Frontier's mobile application. Crunchyroll is set to exclusively stream the resulting anime in select territories. The initial three webtoons announced for adaptation are The Remarried Empress, Teenage Mercenary, and The Boxer. This move follows the industry trend of leveraging the popularity of webtoons, exemplified by the success of the Solo Leveling anime.

Video Game Adaptations Revealed

Fans of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice received a preview of Sekiro: No Defeat, an anime series produced by Kadowaka, Qzil.la, and Arch. The fully hand-drawn series will premiere its eight episodes exclusively on Crunchyroll in January 2027.

Additionally, the multiplayer mode of PlayStation's Ghost of Tsushima is inspiring an anime series titled Ghost of Tsushima Legends. This project is a collaboration between Hayate and PlayStation Productions, with a planned release in 2028.

Further Anime Announcements

Crunchyroll also shared updates on several other series. The manga Kagurabachi will receive an anime adaptation debuting on Crunchyroll in 2027, with new character art revealed at the event.

A first look was provided for Eat-Man, a new adaptation of Akihito Yoshitomi's manga and a remake of the 1997 anime. The series follows Bolt Crank, a mercenary with the ability to consume and reproduce anything. The world premiere trailer for Here U Are, an anime based on a Chinese boys' love manhua, was also shown.

New series scheduled for January 2027 include the romcom Everyone's Darling Has a Secret, based on Kashiko Amane's manga, which received a world premiere trailer. The fantasy series Magical Buffs: The Support Caster is Stronger Than He Realized!, produced by J.C. Staff, will feature an opening song by LiSa and will also premiere in January 2027, accompanied by a new trailer and key art.

Berserk of Gluttony, another fantasy anime, will have its second season arrive on Crunchyroll in 2027. The popular yuri story The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, based on Sumiko Arai's manga, will also begin airing in Japan in January 2027, directed by Masashi Ishiyama.

Theatrical Anime Releases

In addition to series, Crunchyroll announced theatrical releases. The film Witch on the Holy Night, based on Type-Moon's visual novel, will premiere in theaters on January 29, 2027, produced by ufotable. The anime Yuri!!! on Ice will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a special one-day screening of its first five episodes on October 19.

Furthermore, The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure, the first feature film of the popular series, is heading to theaters. Directed by Norihiro Naganuma, the film is based on an original story by Hyuganatsu.
