Crunchyroll is implementing a new policy that will restrict access to its online store to subscribers of its two most expensive tiers, Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan. This change requires customers to pay at least $13.99 per month to purchase merchandise, collectibles, and figurines from the platform's official store.

The online store, previously accessible to anyone, will soon be closed to the general public. Crunchyroll announced the upcoming transition on July 14, though a specific date has not yet been provided.

Currently, Crunchyroll offers three subscription plans: Fan Plan at $9.99 per month, Mega Fan Plan at $13.99 per month, and Ultimate Fan Plan at $17.99 per month. The company discontinued free, ad-supported anime viewing in December 2025.

Leading up to the transition, Crunchyroll is holding a Summer Sale with 50% off select items. These sale items are designated as final sale, with refunds or returns only accepted for damaged or defective products. Gift cards purchased before this policy change will be valid until August 14, 2026, after which customers with remaining balances are advised to contact customer service.

According to Crunchyroll, the revamped store will offer "curated drops and Crunchyroll-exclusive merch." The company stated that more details will be revealed soon. The announcement has already drawn criticism from some fans, who have expressed their displeasure in comments on social media.

Some fans have drawn parallels between this move and recent decisions by other Sony-owned entities, such as PlayStation's planned cessation of physical game disc production in January 2028. Legal actions have also been initiated against Sony in multiple countries concerning its pricing practices and market dominance.
