CD Projekt Red and Paramount Pictures are collaborating on a live-action movie adaptation of the popular role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077, according to a new report. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the Transformers film series, is set to produce the project. This marks Paramount's latest venture into adapting video game properties, following announcements for live-action films based on Street Fighter and Call of Duty.
Details regarding the film's writers, director, and cast have not yet been disclosed. The Cyberpunk 2077 game, released in 2020, is set in the dystopian Night City and follows a mercenary named V who becomes intertwined with the digital ghost of a legendary rock star, Johnny Silverhand. Despite a troubled launch, CD Projekt Red significantly improved the game over subsequent years, making it a fan favorite with over 40 million copies sold.
The universe of Cyberpunk 2077 has previously been explored in the animated Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which premiered in 2022 and received a positive reception. A second season is slated for release in October. CD Projekt Red also confirmed in 2022 that a sequel to the game, codenamed Project Orion and now known as Cyberpunk 2, is in pre-production, though a release date has not been announced.
