Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Will Explore the Game's World, Not Recreate Its Story

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that its upcoming live-action film adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 will not be a direct translation of the game's narrative. Instead, the movie aims to tell a new story set within the established Cyberpunk universe.

Michał Nowakowski, CEO of CD Projekt Red, stated in an interview with Polish outlet PAP Biznes that the studio's intention is not to create a "one-to-one translation of the game’s story." He elaborated that the focus will be on "tell[ing] a story in the world of Cyberpunk," suggesting a broader exploration of the setting rather than a faithful retelling of the game's plot.

This approach mirrors the strategy employed for the successful Netflix animated series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. That collaboration with Studio Trigger resulted in an original narrative that was critically acclaimed and helped to rehabilitate the image of Cyberpunk 2077 following its troubled launch. The anime's success also reportedly contributed to a resurgence in the game's player base, driven by the renewed interest in the franchise.

While details regarding the cast and crew for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie remain limited, reports have indicated that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project. Di Bonaventura has prior experience with video game adaptations, having worked on films such as Dead Rising: Watchtower and Doom: Annihilation.
