Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's Chimera Tank Fight Took Two Years to Develop

The complex Chimera tank boss fight in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty required approximately two years of development and iteration, according to CD Projekt Red game director Gabe Amatangelo and creative director Igor Sarzyński. The pair discussed the challenges of creating the elaborate encounter in a recent AnsweRED Podcast interview.

Amatangelo described the Chimera as a "nexus point of different disciplines," involving gameplay, narrative, art, and worldbuilding. He recalled discussions with art director Paweł Mielniczuk, involving the sharing of videos of military equipment and miniguns, with the aim of making the tank's emergence terrifying and overwhelming.

Mielniczuk elaborated on the extended development time, stating, "We were iterating—I think it was two years to make this boss fight work. We were reiterating over and over." He also mentioned that the tank's design was revised multiple times, with the team changing its equipment and weapons.

Sarzyński noted the boss fight's significant resource investment, calling it "one of the most expensive art assets I think ever." Amatangelo explained that the team faced difficulties in balancing the various components, with the design often leaning too heavily into gameplay, narrative, or art demonstration at different stages. The directors worked collaboratively to refine the encounter, focusing on "beat by beat" progression.

The development of the Chimera fight exemplifies the intricate process behind creating large-scale set pieces in games, where multiple teams and creative directions must converge to achieve a cohesive and impactful experience.
