Cyberpunk 2077 Sees Massive Player Surge Following Edgerunners Season 2 Launch

Cyberpunk 2077 has experienced a significant resurgence in player numbers, achieving its largest peak on Steam since the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and Update 2.0. This surge is largely attributed to the recent launch of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 and a coinciding substantial update for the game.

At its peak, Cyberpunk 2077 recorded 187,215 concurrent players on Steam, a figure not seen since October 2023. This increase is expected to be reflected across other PC platforms, including GOG and the Epic Games Store, as well as on current-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and potentially the Nintendo Switch 2.

The latest game update introduces a variety of new features and content that have enticed players back to Night City. These include dual-wielding capabilities, new cosmetic items, customizable cyberware fashion options, and enhanced opportunities for in-game exploration. A new story mission specifically tied to the Edgerunners anime also appears to be a major draw.

Furthermore, the return of the Edgerunners anime series is undoubtedly playing a significant role in attracting new and returning players. The first season of Edgerunners was instrumental in revitalizing Cyberpunk 2077's reputation following its challenging December 2020 launch. The second season seems poised to have a similar, if not greater, impact on the game's player base.

Following the premiere of Edgerunners Season 1 in September 2022, Cyberpunk 2077 saw its Steam player count peak at 136,724. The current numbers indicate an even more substantial increase this time around. Adding to the game's renewed appeal, the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is currently available at a 70% discount on Steam, lowering the entry barrier for interested players.

Development on Cyberpunk 2 is ongoing, with game director Gabe Amatangelo suggesting that the sequel is developing in ways that exceed his initial vision for the project.
