Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved a major sales milestone, with CD Projekt Red announcing that the game has sold over 40 million copies as of July 3, 2026. This figure represents a significant recovery for the ambitious RPG, which endured a notoriously difficult launch in December 2020.
CD Projekt Red celebrated the achievement on X, with Michał Nowakowski, a representative from the studio, stating that the sales demonstrate the "incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077." He added that the milestone is a testament to the studio's ability to create immersive stories that players continue to engage with. While its sales have not yet matched those of industry giants like Grand Theft Auto V or CD Projekt Red's own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 now ranks among the 23 games that have surpassed 40 million units sold globally.
Upon its release, Cyberpunk 2077 was plagued by numerous bugs and lacked several promised features. However, CD Projekt Red maintained a commitment to improving the game through extensive updates over several years. This sustained effort culminated in the well-received Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023. Despite Nowakowski's assertion that the studio may not have fully redeemed itself from the initial launch issues, the ongoing improvements have clearly resonated with a large player base.
CD Projekt Red has also indicated a continued dedication to the Cyberpunk franchise. A full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development. Furthermore, plans are underway for a trading card game and a second season of the Netflix anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Nowakowski highlighted the success of Cyberpunk 2077 as providing a "great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe."
With the first game now having sold over 40 million copies, the Cyberpunk franchise appears poised for continued growth. Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
