Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, CD Projekt Red announced. This figure marks a significant achievement for the open-world RPG, which endured a notoriously troubled launch in 2020.

At release, the game was plagued by widespread technical issues, particularly on last-generation consoles, leading to its removal from the PlayStation Store. Despite these early setbacks, CD Projekt Red has continued to develop and update the game. This ongoing support, coupled with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, has seemingly revitalized the game's reception and sales.

"40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best—creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years," said co-CEO Michał Nowakowski. He added that this sales success provides a solid foundation for future projects set within the Cyberpunk universe, including the anticipated Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime.

Nowakowski acknowledged that the initial launch may have alienated some players, stating, "I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing. But I do hope we will be able to make it back—if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next."

While Cyberpunk 2077's initial launch hype drove 13 million sales in its first 10 days, the game's current sales trajectory demonstrates a sustained recovery. It still trails behind CD Projekt Red's other major success, The Witcher 3, which has sold over 65 million copies. Nonetheless, reaching 40 million units sold is a considerable accomplishment, especially for a title that faced such significant early criticism and technical difficulties.
