Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games have appointed Dan Ayoub as their new head, succeeding John Hight who departed in July. Ayoub, who previously served as senior vice president of digital games at Wizards, will now oversee major franchises including Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons, along with Hasbro Digital Games. This promotion marks the first time an internal candidate has been selected for the role following a comprehensive search.
Ayoub brings a wealth of experience from the gaming industry. Before joining Wizards of the Coast, he held positions as executive producer and studio head at 343 Industries, the studio behind Halo. He also spent over a year as vice president and general manager at co-development studio Certain Affinity.
In his new capacity, Ayoub will direct two significant digital projects: the Mass Effect-inspired sci-fi RPG 'Exodus' from Archetype Entertainment and the third-person action-adventure title 'Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons' developed by Invoke Studios.
"I'm honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, and grateful to Chris [Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks] and the leadership team for this opportunity," Ayoub stated. "Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We'll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can't wait to get started."
Ayoub's appointment comes at a complex juncture for Hasbro's digital endeavors. The company recently reported a $56 million non-cash impairment charge attributed to the cancellation of several upcoming games. Furthermore, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has expressed a strong belief in the future of artificial intelligence, even while acknowledging that current player sentiment, particularly for Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, does not favor its integration into core products. Ayoub's commitment to respecting "artists and creators" will be a key factor to watch as the company navigates these evolving technological and creative landscapes.
