Spike Chunsoft has announced that pre-orders for physical editions of Danganronpa 2×2 on Switch 2 are being canceled due to unavoidable reasons necessitating a shift to game-key cards. This change affects all physical versions, including the "Psycho Tropical Vacation Package" special edition, for customers who pre-ordered through the company's online stores. These customers will receive an email confirming the cancellation and information regarding pre-orders for the game-key card version.

For those who had pre-ordered physical copies through other retailers, Spike Chunsoft states these orders will not be canceled but will ship with a game-key copy of the game instead of a cartridge containing the full game. The developer has indicated that the decision was made after careful consideration and that no further details are available at this time. "The decision was not taken lightly and follows careful consideration," the company said in a statement.

The game-key card format has become a point of contention for some Switch 2 owners. These cards function as digital license confirmations, requiring the user to download the game digitally rather than having it stored on the cartridge. Nintendo itself has adopted this approach for some titles, such as Pokémon Pokopia.

Danganronpa 2×2, a remake and retooling of the 2012 murder mystery game, was originally slated for a 2026 release but experienced a delay announced during Anime Expo in July. The updated version will include a new "Slayhem" route, which promises an alternate "what if" narrative featuring new killers and victims within the game's murder mystery framework.
