Spike Chunsoft's remake of the cult murder mystery visual novel, Danganronpa 2x2, has been delayed to early 2027. Series creator Kazuta Kodaka confirmed the shift, citing the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 as a significant reason for the decision.
Kodaka explained in an interview with Crunchyroll that the industry-wide trend of moving releases away from Grand Theft Auto 6's November launch date played a role. However, he also candidly admitted a more personal motivation: he wants time to play Grand Theft Auto 6 himself. "I wouldn't have time to make the game while playing Grand Theft Auto 6, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time," Kodaka stated, acknowledging the immense anticipation for Rockstar's open-world title.
The delay, while inconvenient for players, will provide the development team with additional time for production, which Kodaka welcomed.
Danganronpa 2x2 is a remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, originally released in 2012. The updated version aims to revitalize the classic game with graphical enhancements and quality-of-life improvements. Notably, the remake will feature a completely overhauled 3D game map and a new story route titled Slayhem Mode. Producer Shohei Sakakibara indicated that Slayhem Mode alone will offer approximately 35 hours of gameplay, adding to the original scenario's 30 hours.
The remake is slated for release in early 2027 across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
