Danny Boyle has given fans a reason to hope for the continuation of his zombie franchise. Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, Boyle confirmed that "28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it." While a definitive release date remains uncertain, Boyle revealed that screenwriter Alex Garland, who penned the original "28 Days Later" and both "28 Years" films, has already completed a script that Boyle described as "very good."
Despite this promising development, the third film in the planned trilogy has not yet received an official greenlight from the studio. The most recent entry, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," was released earlier this year, a swift follow-up to 2025's "28 Years Later." The conclusion of the trilogy is expected to heavily feature Cillian Murphy, reprising his role as Jim, who made a surprise return at the end of "The Bone Temple." Jim's narrative would likely intersect with characters introduced in the recent sequel, Spike (Alfie Williams) and Kellie (Erin Kellyman).
Boyle on Bond and Future Projects
Beyond the "28 Years Later" series, Boyle also touched on his past involvement with the James Bond franchise. He was initially slated to direct "No Time to Die" but reportedly departed the project due to creative differences. "They lost confidence in it," Boyle commented, adding, "It's a shame, because it could have been really good." The director expressed confidence in Denis Villeneuve, who is set to helm the next Bond film, and suggested Jack O'Connell as a potential successor to Daniel Craig in the iconic role. Boyle and O'Connell have previously collaborated on the first "28 Years Later" film and the upcoming project "Ink."
