Five years after the release of the fan-favorite Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition book, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, a new comic series will revisit the Domains of Dread. Dark Horse Comics is launching Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft, a four-issue series that continues the narrative established in the original sourcebook. The series is set to begin on September 16.
Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, published in 2021, was celebrated for its unique perspective, told from the viewpoint of vampire hunter Rudolph van Richten. The book integrated letters from van Richten to other heroes, including his protégé Ezmerelda d'Avenir, offering deep context to the horror-themed setting of the Domains of Dread. Wizards of the Coast later adapted the book for the 5.5e ruleset with Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, released in June.
The new comic series will follow Ez and other monster-hunting proteges of van Richten as they embark on a quest to save the world. Guided by the spectral presence of Rudolph's son, Erasmus van Richten, Ez finds herself in Lamordia, a frozen domain. There, she is captured by Darklord Viktra Mordenheim, who intends to use her in her experiments. Ez must then find a way to escape and continue her mission, aided by an unexpected new character.
Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft #1 will feature a creative team including writer Amy Chu, known for works like Carmilla: The First Vampire and Red Sonja. Line art will be provided by Ariela Kristantina, colors by Arif Prianto, and letters by Haley Rose-Lyon. The series joins Dark Horse's existing D&D titles, such as The Fallbacks and a new series featuring Mordenkainen and Tasha. The first issue will also include alternate covers by artists Guillem March, Riley Rossmo, Francesco Francavilla, Todor Hristov, and Angela Wu. The first five pages of Issue #1 are available for exclusive preview.
