Red Hook Studios has announced new downloadable content for its original roguelike dungeon crawler, Darkest Dungeon, titled The Fire's Edge, set to release in August. This surprise announcement comes years after the game's initial early access launch in 2016 and subsequent full release, and notably, after the studio has already launched a sequel and supported it with its own DLC.
The Fire's Edge aims to bridge the gap between the two titles by introducing content inspired by Darkest Dungeon II. Specifically, two heroes from the sequel, The Duelist and The Runaway, will be playable in the original game. The Duelist will feature mechanics allowing for party repositioning and stance switching between offense and defense, while The Runaway will bring the Burn damage type to the predecessor.
Beyond new heroes, the DLC will also introduce new mechanics for equippable trinkets. Furthermore, three Hamlet districts—the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp—will be added, offering new strategic options for players. These additions are intended to provide fresh challenges and replayability for those returning to the first Darkest Dungeon.
This paid DLC will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on August 18. While the price has not yet been revealed, Red Hook Studios has stated that efforts are being made to ensure compatibility with existing mods for Darkest Dungeon, with an improved mod manager also planned.
Addressing potential concerns about the sequel's development, Red Hook confirmed via the series' X account that DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 is still planned and is expected to arrive in 2027.
