Red Hook Studios is bringing new content to the original Darkest Dungeon with an upcoming DLC titled The Fire's Edge, slated for release on August 18. This marks the first downloadable content for the acclaimed roguelike in six years, and it introduces elements from its 2023 sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2.
The Fire's Edge will include two new characters previously introduced in Darkest Dungeon 2: the Duelist and the Runaway. The DLC will also add three new districts, new trinkets, tools, narrative events, and other surprises. Furthermore, mechanics from the sequel, such as the burn status effect which complements the Runaway's stealth-focused playstyle, will be integrated into the original game.
For those unfamiliar with Darkest Dungeon, this DLC presents an opportune moment to experience the game. It is a turn-based roguelike where players assemble parties to explore procedurally generated dungeons. The game is known for its challenging nature, featuring permanent character death, debilitating ailments, and a stress mechanic that can lead to dire consequences for heroes. The original game's iconic narrator, voiced by the late Wayne June, presents a unique consideration for future story content, as the developers have stated they declined to use AI to replicate his voice, despite having his permission.
The Fire's Edge will be the fifth DLC for Darkest Dungeon. It is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms on August 18. An Xbox version is also planned, though a release date has not yet been announced.
