Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video's live-action God of War series, taking over the role from Ryan Hurst. Hurst, who previously portrayed Thor in the God of War games, was forced to exit the project due to a severe bicep injury sustained during a stunt. His lengthy recovery period would have significantly impacted production, leading the studio to recast the character.
Reports of Bautista's potential involvement surfaced earlier this month, with the actor now set to embody the iconic Spartan warrior. Hurst had reportedly gained 40 pounds to convincingly portray Kratos's muscular physique and had shared images of his transformation, complete with Kratos's signature red tattoo. Bautista, known for his own significant physical transformations, notably shedding 75 pounds in late 2024, is expected to undergo a similar process to prepare for the role.

Bautista has long expressed interest in appearing in video game adaptations, having publicly campaigned for a starring role in a Gears of War series, which he has called his “dream role.” He reportedly pitched the project to Universal even when approached for a role in the Fast and Furious franchise.
The God of War series is expected to resume filming in mid-October 2026, with preparations beginning this month. This casting news follows recent updates from Santa Monica Studios, where Cory Barlog confirmed that a new game centered on Kratos, titled God of War Laufey, is in development and slated for a February 2027 release.
