Dave Bautista is reportedly in negotiations to take on the role of Kratos in Prime Video's upcoming live-action God of War television series. The actor, known for his imposing physique and roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Blade Runner 2049, has entered discussions to portray PlayStation's famously gruff demigod.

This potential casting follows a recent change in the series' production, as actor Ryan Hurst has reportedly been removed from his role due to a bicep injury requiring surgery. Hurst's injury means he would be unable to return to the series until next year, prompting the production to seek a recast. If Bautista signs on, the aim is to resume filming in the fall. Bautista's natural physical build is seen as an advantage, potentially reducing the need for extensive training to achieve the character's expected stature. His background as a professional wrestler in WWE also suggests he possesses the necessary physicality for the role. Kratos presents an opportunity for Bautista to expand his acting range.

Bautista has previously expressed interest in other major video game adaptations. In 2018, he publicly declared Marcus Fenix from Gears of War as a "dream role" and actively pursued the part. While Universal's Gears of War film adaptation has stalled, Netflix is currently developing a Gears of War movie. However, it appears Amazon and PlayStation may have secured a major adaptation first with God of War.

Rumors also suggest that the God of War series might recast the role of Atreus starting in its second season. This potential recasting is believed to be a move to allow production to proceed more quickly, accommodating the significant time jump between the events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, which is expected to form the basis for Season 2. The three-year time difference between the two games is a factor in this consideration.

Beyond the television series, multiple new God of War games are also reportedly in development, including a title named God of War Laufey scheduled for release in February, and another Kratos-centric game. The franchise continues to expand its presence across different media.
