Dave Bautista is reportedly in negotiations to portray Kratos in Amazon's upcoming God of War television adaptation, according to reports from Deadline and Variety. This potential casting follows an on-set injury sustained by lead actor Ryan Hurst, which has necessitated his exit from the role due to a lengthy recovery period.
Hurst's bicep tear reportedly requires a recovery timeline that would prevent him from resuming the part until at least next year. Bautista, known for his transition from WWE stardom to a successful acting career, is being considered to take over as the titular God of War. While Bautista has adopted a leaner physique in recent years, outlets suggest he has the capability to gain the necessary muscle mass to embody Kratos's imposing presence.
A potential challenge for Bautista in the role could be his age, as he is currently 57. This may become a factor if the God of War series is renewed for multiple seasons, requiring the actor to maintain his physical condition over an extended period. Amazon is also expected to implement enhanced safety measures on set to protect the cast.
This is not the first time Bautista has been connected to a live-action adaptation of the God of War franchise. Previously, he expressed interest in playing Marcus Fenix in a Gears of War film. Although a big-screen adaptation of Gears of War has been in development limbo, Netflix is also producing its own version of the game series, and Bautista has indicated his continued desire to play Fenix in that project.
Bautista's performance as Drax in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy is often cited as a benchmark for his acting capabilities, where he balanced intense physicality with nuanced acting. This experience is seen as highly relevant to portraying Kratos, a character demanding both a powerful physique and significant dramatic depth.
Beyond Kratos, reports suggest that the role of Atreus may also see a recast for the second season, with an older actor potentially replacing Callum Vinson. Amazon is reportedly looking to begin filming the new season soon, rather than waiting for Vinson to age into the role. The second season is expected to draw from God of War Ragnarok, the narrative sequel to the 2018 game that the first season adapts.
