Dawn of War 4 Director Addresses Blood Ravens' Enduring Lore Mysteries

Warhammer 40,000 fans have long debated the specifics of the Blood Ravens Space Marine chapter's lore, prompting a discussion with Jan Theysen, game director for the upcoming Dawn of War 4. While Theysen expressed enthusiasm for the game's campaign, detailing its satisfying Ork presence and impressive combat director, he also tackled fan-favorite questions regarding the Blood Ravens' painted insignia and their potential connections to other Space Marine chapters.

One persistent point of contention among the community revolves around the color of the Blood Ravens' chestplate marking, known as the 'imperialis.' In the original Dawn of War games, this symbol was depicted as gold, but subsequent titles, Dawn of War 2 and Dawn of War 3, shifted it to black. Games Workshop, the owner of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property, has offered varied official depictions and limited lore for the Blood Ravens, further fueling fan speculation. This ambiguity extends to their origin story and their 'gene seed,' a fundamental aspect of Space Marine lore.

When asked about the decision to revert to a black imperialis in Dawn of War 4, Theysen indicated that the choice was largely based on the most recent established appearance. "I think we just took the latest iteration of them, and there it's black, right?" he stated, acknowledging that while the first Dawn of War is a foundational influence, the universe has evolved over two decades. He clarified that this decision was not a point of significant debate between King Art Games and Games Workshop, but rather an adoption of the current official representation.

Further fan theories center on the Blood Ravens' potential relationships with other chapters. In a recent trailer, Captain Cyrus of the Blood Ravens referred to a Dark Angels member who saved him as 'brother.' In Space Marine parlance, this term is typically reserved for members of one's own chapter, with individuals from allied chapters being addressed as 'cousin.' Theysen confirmed that this instance was simply a reflection of camaraderie, stating, "In that case I can confirm it's just Space Marines who are 'brothers-in-arms'."

Regarding the Blood Ravens' origins, Theysen explained that their history will not be a central focus in Dawn of War 4. The chapter is depicted as being isolated, far from their homeworld and on the 'wrong side of the Great Rift,' meaning the game's narrative will emphasize their struggle for survival rather than delving deeply into their past. "So for them, it's more about survival basically. And so it's not exploring their history, and they're not going back to their old world or anything like that," he noted.

When pressed about a fan theory suggesting the Blood Ravens might share a gene seed with the corrupted Chaos Legion, the Thousand Sons, due to similarities in color scheme and a high number of psykers, Theysen offered a succinct "No comment." This response leaves the possibility open for interpretation, hinting that such connections may or may not be explored within the game's lore.
