Xbox Game Pass is set to lose the acclaimed point-and-click adventure game Day of the Tentacle Remastered on October 31. The removal comes after the game's seven-year tenure on the service.
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993, Day of the Tentacle is a landmark title in the point-and-click genre, notable for its use of the SCUMM game engine. This engine allowed players to interact with the game world through a command interface.
The remastered version, developed by Double Fine, was released in 2016. It includes modern visual enhancements and a host of bonus features. Notably, the remaster also contains a fully playable version of LucasArts' 1987 game Maniac Mansion, which first introduced the SCUMM engine.
The game's narrative centers on Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne, who must use time-traveling porta-potties to thwart the plans of the mutated Purple Tentacle. Their attempts to alter the past, present, and future lead to a series of comedic and complex puzzles.
Double Fine, which originally collaborated with LucasArts on the Grim Fandango Remastered, later acquired the rights to Day of the Tentacle. The studio announced it was becoming independent again in July, which may factor into its titles departing the Game Pass library.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a relatively short experience, typically taking around five to six hours to complete, making it an accessible option for players looking to experience a classic during spooky season. The game is available on PlayStation and Windows PC, though a Nintendo Switch version is not currently available. A short documentary about the remaster's development is also available for those interested in a behind-the-scenes look.
