Accessory maker Dbrand has pulled its unofficial Steam Machine Companion Cube case from sale, issuing refunds to all customers who had ordered the Portal-themed product. The company admitted in a Reddit post that it failed to obtain permission from Valve to create and sell the accessory.

Dbrand had launched the case on June 22nd, shortly before official Steam Machine pricing and launch details were revealed. The company stated that over fifteen thousand individuals signed up to be notified when the concept render was first posted on November 12th, 2025, the same day the Steam Machine was announced. The case reportedly became the company's second-most popular product launch.

Valve's legal team contacted Dbrand, asserting that the Companion Cube is Valve intellectual property for which the company does not hold a license. They requested the immediate removal of the product and its promotional film. Dbrand acknowledged that Valve's request was within their rights and that the interaction was fair and respectful.

Following the takedown, Dbrand appealed to Valve to see if the project could continue under a proper licensing agreement. Valve declined this request. Dbrand expressed regret for their approach, stating, "We’re going to regret that decision for a very long time." The company also apologized to Valve for the "headache" and acknowledged they "should’ve asked first."
