DC Announces "Year of Wonder" for 2027 with New Comic Creators and More

DC Comics has declared 2027 the "Year of Wonder," signaling a significant focus on the iconic Amazonian princess with new comic book arcs and additional reveals planned throughout the year. This initiative follows the conclusion of Tom King and Daniel Sampere's run on Wonder Woman in December.

Kicking off the "Year of Wonder" in January 2027, veteran writer Louise Simonson, known for her work on X-Factor and The Death of Superman, will take over the Wonder Woman title for a four-issue story arc with art by Cian Tormey. This run will see Diana attempting to repeal the Amazon Safety Act, which prevents Amazons from leaving their island. Simonson expressed excitement about writing such an iconic female lead and teaming her with Lois Lane.

Following Simonson's arc, Eisner Award-nominated writer Stephanie Williams, who has contributed to Wonder Woman and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, will pen a six-issue run concluding in October 2027. She will be joined by artist Elena Casagrande. Williams described her upcoming work as an opportunity to explore Diana's character more deeply, featuring a long-anticipated team-up with Nubia.

Tom King's tenure on Wonder Woman, which began in 2023, generated some controversy among fans. While King has achieved critical acclaim for works like Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, his characterization of Diana, dialogue, and perceived disregard for continuity have drawn criticism. King's background as a former CIA officer has also been a point of discussion.

DC has indicated that more Wonder Woman stories and creative talent will be announced in the lead-up to and throughout 2027. Beyond comics, the "Year of Wonder" may also bring updates on the long-in-development Wonder Woman film at DC Studios. While Ana Nogueira was previously reported to be writing the script, details regarding casting or director remain unconfirmed.

The first issue of the new era, Wonder Woman #41, is scheduled for release on January 20, 2027, with a cover by Ryan Sook and variant covers by Daniel Sampere, David Nakayama, Cian Tormey, and Walter Simonson. The issue will be priced at $4.99.
