DC Studios has officially announced the title for its previously teased Gorilla Grodd and Jimmy Olsen series: The People v. Gorilla Grodd. Set to debut on HBO Max, the eight-episode, half-hour series is described as a true-crime documentary with a comedic spin.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, revealed the title and further details via social media. The series will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd. The official logline states that a hyperintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. Jimmy Olsen, as a reporter for The Daily Planet, will reopen the case for his docuseries, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in a high-profile Metropolis murder trial.

Supporting the main cast are actors reprising their roles from the DCU's Superman series as Daily Planet staff: Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Additional cast members include Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Dan Perrault, and Arian Moayed, though their specific roles have not yet been disclosed.

The series is helmed by American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, who are attached as showrunners, writers, and executive producers. Yacenda will also direct all episodes. Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios' other co-CEO, are also executive producing. In a joint statement, Gunn and Safran expressed excitement about exploring the world of the Daily Planet cast and working with Yacenda and Perrault to delve into the comedic and darker aspects of the DCU through Olsen's docuseries.

Yacenda and Perrault stated their ambition to create a series that feels like an authentic artifact from the DCU, specifically a Daily Planet original documentary. They expressed hope that the show will appeal to fans of comics, comedy, and true crime, noting that it is already a hit in Metropolis.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd was initially teased late last year, with Safran previously indicating that shooting would commence in 2026. Gunn had clarified that it would be a show focused on both Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd. While a release date has not yet been announced, the series marks DC Studios' foray into the true-crime genre within its television offerings, following other DCU projects like Lanterns.
