DC Studios has reportedly canceled two planned television series, Waller and Paradise Lost, according to a new report from The Ankler. This news follows earlier indications that a Booster Gold series might also not be moving forward, though its status remains somewhat uncertain.
Waller, intended to star Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, was part of the initial DC Universe slate announced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran in 2023. The character most recently appeared in the animated series Creature Commandos, which marked the beginning of the new DC Universe continuity. Paradise Lost was also announced as part of the 2023 slate, envisioned as a drama set on Themyscira, the home island of Wonder Woman, focusing on its origins and political landscape.
With these reported cancellations, three of the five TV series originally revealed for the DC Universe have now been shelved. The Booster Gold show, while reportedly seeking a new creative team after its initial writer departed, may still see a future.
These developments occur as the DC Universe navigates a challenging period. The recent film Superman performed moderately at the box office, grossing just over $600 million globally. Its follow-up, Supergirl, faced a less favorable reception from critics and audiences, earning only $126 million worldwide. Both titular characters are slated to reappear in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow.
DC Studios' upcoming film slate includes Clayface and a Batman movie, distinct from Matt Reeves's separate Batman franchise. The studio is actively working to establish its presence and identity within the competitive superhero landscape.
