DC Comics has announced Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, a new six-issue miniseries that reimagines the iconic Green Lantern Corps with a distinct Warhammer 40,000 aesthetic. This Elseworlds story, penned by Dan Watters with art from Kyle Hotz, places the Lanterns as heavily militarized soldiers battling across a war-torn galaxy.
In Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, the Empire of Humanity is depicted as a relentless force conquering the stars. Standing against this expansion is the Green Lantern Corps, portrayed as a beleaguered army. The series focuses on Hal Jordan, the sole human warrior within the Corps, who was once a soldier for humanity before being betrayed by Oliver Queen. Rescued and reprogrammed by the Lanterns, Jordan becomes a key weapon in their struggle.
Artist Kyle Hotz described his visual approach, aiming to balance epic space opera with the emotional toll of war. He stated his intention is to convey a sense of the Lanterns being worn down and outmatched, with their armor damaged and weapons makeshift, reflecting soldiers on the brink of defeat.
The official synopsis from DC Comics details a universe where the Empire of Humanity has systematically conquered planets. The Green Lantern Corps stands as the only significant opposition. Hal Jordan, initially a human combatant, is left for dead by his comrade Oliver Queen. His subsequent recruitment by the Green Lantern Corps positions him as their only human champion and a vital strategic asset against humankind.
This Elseworlds designation signifies that Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos operates outside the established DC continuity, allowing creators significant freedom to reinterpret characters and settings. Previous examples of this approach include high-fantasy takes on Green Lantern and reinterpretations of Superman's origin.
The first issue of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos is slated for release on January 20, 2027. The creative team also includes colorist Dan Brown and letterer Steve Wands. The 32-page debut issue will retail for $4.99, with variant covers available from artists Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood. A special foil variant by Barends will be priced at $7.99.
