The rereleased version of Dead or Alive 6, now known as Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, is facing significant backlash from players, evidenced by a 70% negative review score on Steam. This comes after the original version of Dead or Alive 6 was removed from sale to make way for the new iteration. For comparison, the initial release of Dead or Alive 6 held a 70% positive rating on Steam before the delisting.
Player Criticisms Mount
A primary complaint centers on the increased cost of downloadable content in Dead or Alive 6 Last Round. While save data transfers from the original game can unlock previously purchased characters and costumes, exclusive SNK characters Mai and Kula are not included and must be repurchased. This has led to accusations of players being forced to pay for content they already own.
Players also criticize the rerelease for being "barebones." Despite an upgraded lighting effect on one stage, the visual improvements are otherwise minimal. While Last Round does allow costumes to unlock faster, the most significant addition highlighted by Koei Tecmo is a new photo mode. This has done little to appease players who had hoped for more substantial gameplay enhancements.
Series' Identity Under Scrutiny
The Dead or Alive series has long attempted to balance its identity as a competitive fighting game with its reputation for overt fan service. Critics argue that the focus on expensive DLC costumes, particularly bikinis and themed outfits, overshadows potential improvements to the core fighting mechanics. One widely shared Steam review expresses this sentiment, stating, "It's insulting. Tecmo just sees this as the coomer franchise and thinks they can get away with the absolute bare minimum."
Further frustrations include the increased install size of the game, noted by some as being "40% bigger." Notably, Dead or Alive 6 Last Round still lacks rollback netcode and crossplay functionality, features commonly expected in modern fighting games. The combination of expensive DLC, a perceived lack of significant upgrades, and a continued reliance on provocative aesthetics has fueled player dissatisfaction with the rerelease.
