Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will feature Deadpool as part of its final lineup of multiversal brawlers, and his gameplay trailer reveals a character packed with fighting game Easter eggs. The foul-mouthed antihero possesses a unique mechanic that allows him to reference and utilize attacks from across various fighting game series, drawing inspiration from titles spanning decades.
Deadpool's move set includes a clear nod to Jack-O's distinctive pose from Guilty Gear Strive, known for its unique animation. Another move mirrors Johnny Cage's signature split-punch attack from Mortal Kombat, complete with the characteristic visual flair. He also employs a Scorpion-esque spear grab, a classic move from the Mortal Kombat franchise, and a taunt reminiscent of the "Toasty!" catchphrase.
Further tributes include a Yoshimitsu-style Hara-Kiri attack, a self-damaging move seen in Tekken, which plays into Deadpool's healing factor and self-aware nature. This particular move might also allude to the tumultuous first meeting between Deadpool and Wolverine in the comics or upcoming film. Dr. Doom's aerial stomp attacks, popularized in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, also find a place in Deadpool's arsenal. The character also unleashes an attack resembling Vegeta's Consecutive Energy Blast from Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Beyond direct combat references, Deadpool's dialogue includes a quip about resorting to random attacks, echoing a sentiment often associated with characters in fighting games. The bizarre arsenal extends to projectile attacks, one of which features Mr. Polygon Man, the original PlayStation mascot and final boss from PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale. He also performs an uppercut inspired by Sol Badguy's signature move from Guilty Gear, and a forward-charging attack reminiscent of May's Mr. Dolphin special. Lady Deadpool, who also appears, executes Jam's Ryuujin Kick from Guilty Gear during an ultimate attack, which bears a resemblance to team attacks seen in Persona titles. The trailer concludes with Lady Deadpool striking a pose reminiscent of Sailor Moon.
Nolan North returns to voice Deadpool, reprising his role from previous Marvel games like the 2014 Deadpool title, Marvel's Midnight Suns, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is set to launch on August 6 for PC and PS5. An open beta featuring Blade will commence on July 24.
