Defender of the Crown, the seminal Amiga strategy game released 40 years ago, has returned with a new PC port titled The Legend Returns. This updated version includes the original game alongside a complete visual overhaul and an entirely new roguelite mode.
The original Defender of the Crown is a medieval strategy game set in England following the death of the king, where players aim to build armies, capture castles, and engage in jousting. The Legend Returns faithfully includes this classic experience with its original pixelated Amiga graphics.
Complementing the original is a 'classic mode' which features modern graphics, refined mechanics, and smoother systems, while retaining a pixel art aesthetic with contemporary detail. The jousting sequences, in particular, have been noted for their satisfying execution while still honoring the spirit of the original.
A new 'kingdom mode' introduces roguelite elements, combining deckbuilding and dice-driven combat. This mode features procedurally generated maps where players must unite the kingdom by defeating three enemy lords. The press release describes this mode as offering increasing complexity through unlocked dice types, relics, and mechanics, alongside opportunities for tournaments, rescuing Saxon ladies, raiding for gold, and besieging castles. The game is available on Steam.
