The launch of Deltarune: Chapter 5 on June 24 has resulted in a significant surge for the episodic RPG, setting an all-time concurrent player record on Steam alone. The game recorded 291,816 active players, a figure that more than doubled its previous peak. This influx of players places Deltarune among the top five most played games on Steam, a chart typically led by live-service titles and idle games.
Beyond its player count success, Deltarune's musical impact has also been recognized, with composer Toby Fox achieving a first-time ranking on Billboard charts. The tracks "Flower Man" and "Cutie Mew Mew Magic" reached the 13th and 18th positions on the Hot Dance/Electronic charts, respectively. While the score for Chapters 3 and 4 had previously appeared on Billboard's Soundtracks album chart, this marks the first instance of individual songs charting.
The game's soundtrack as a whole achieved No. 3 on the Soundtracks chart and No. 5 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. The success is partly attributed to the introduction of memorable new characters and their associated musical themes. "Flower Man," the main theme for Flowery, features a character who evolves from an antagonist to an ally, notable for his nonsensical vocal quips like "Glue!" The unvoiced lyrics in the initial in-game presentation of "Flower Man" have also encouraged numerous fan covers.
"Cutie Mew Mew Magic," the theme for the chapter's secret boss, notably includes a cameo by virtual singer Hatsune Miku. This Vocaloid collaboration has inspired fan-made covers featuring other virtual singers such as Kasane Teto. The chapter's new characters, including the seemingly antagonistic allies Flowery, the "stab-happy murder child" Aqua, and her "scholarly pseudo-sibling" Seth, have resonated widely within the fanbase, generating substantial meme content and fan creations.
Flowery has been the subject of multiple fan animations, Miku's appearance has been widely parodied, and fighting game mods have already emerged allowing players to control some of these characters. The "weird" route, representing a darker, bad ending in the game, continues to be a significant point of discussion and theory among players, further fueling online engagement.
