A recent update for Toby Fox's Deltarune has added a new, exceptionally well-hidden conversation that appears to connect three of the game's most significant enigmas: the Shadow Crystals, the hidden Eggs, and a mysterious entity referred to as FRIEND.

This update, released shortly after Chapter 5 became available, primarily addresses bug fixes and minor adjustments. However, a subtle change in the dialogue of a shopkeeper in the Cliffs has ignited considerable discussion within the player community due to its profound narrative implications.

To unlock this secret dialogue, players must meet three specific conditions. Firstly, they must have defeated the secret boss of each of the game's five chapters to obtain the Shadow Crystals. The purpose of these crystals remains unclear, though they are believed to be linked to the secret bosses and potentially powerful crafting or gameplay mechanics. Secondly, players need to have found the hidden Egg within Chapter 5. Eggs are found under peculiar circumstances in each chapter, gifted by an unseen "Mysterious Man." These are exceptionally difficult to locate, often requiring players to engage in obscure interactions or lengthy, repetitive actions.

In Chapter 5, the egg is found in the wheat field room. Players must repeatedly attempt to cut a single stubborn sheaf of wheat until a balloon appears, which then leads them to the egg. The third and final condition involves interacting with FRIEND, a cryptic character whose appearances have been sparse and unsettling. FRIEND's likeness, characterized by a creepy smile, has been subtly integrated into various parts of the game since its early chapters. It appeared in Chapter 3 during a tutorial about Dark Worlds, and its face has been spotted in backgrounds in Chapter 2 and Chapter 4, as well as during a secret boss fight in Chapter 3. More recently, FRIEND's image appears in Chapter 5 in a specific, hazardous interaction. To trigger this, players must reach the cliffs area, stop before the vine leading to the next screen, jump to the right, and open Kris's action menu mid-fall. Interacting with the apparent target prompts FRIEND's unsettling smile to flash on screen, causing the party to take damage.

Once all three conditions are met, returning to the shop in the Cliffs and selecting the "Talk" option will trigger the secret dialogue. In it, Mew Mew, the secret boss of Chapter 5, comments on a cat bite wound on Kris's hand. The dialogue references cats being relentless in their pursuit of prey, specifically mentioning eggs. "The cats are not too smart, but once they find a target, they never stop chasing it until they get bored. And when they find you, the bite… very, VERY hard. Some people would do anything to get away from them, even change their appearance, or go into hiding…" this exchange states.

This revelation has significant implications, formally linking FRIEND, the eggs, and the secret bosses. Previously, these elements were largely considered disparate or coincidental. The new dialogue strongly suggests FRIEND is an active antagonist, actively seeking the collected eggs, which themselves are theorized by some to represent repressed trauma for the protagonist, Kris. Further speculation connects these elements to the "Mysterious Man" and even the character W.D. Gaster from Undertale. The recurring motif of pink and gold eye colors, seen on FRIEND, Spamton's glasses, and in Chapter 5's aesthetic, also adds to the growing list of interconnected details.

The deliberate placement of this dialogue, so long after the chapter's release, suggests it is not an oversight but a planned narrative development. It indicates that the journey from Chapter 5 to future installments may involve escalating tension and the unfolding of these deep mysteries, especially given the continued presence of a related alternate reality game (ARG) tied to the game's secret routes.
