As Destiny 2 reaches the conclusion of its live service era, Bungie Communications Lead Dylan Gafner, widely recognized as dmg04 within the community, has offered words of reassurance to players who may feel a sense of responsibility for the game's fate. The final update for Destiny 2 has been released, and with it, the regular developer updates, leaving many to reflect on the trajectory of the once-dominant live service shooter.

Responding to a Destiny 2 streamer who questioned whether they had "done enough to try and help the situation," Gafner emphasized the immense contribution of the player base. "You all have done more for this game and our studio than could ever be imagined, and no words can accurately depict how lucky we are to have shared these worlds with you," Gafner stated. He urged players not to assign blame to themselves, advising, "Don't blame yourselves or think you could have / should have done more. This is just the way it goes sometimes."

This sentiment comes after a history of complex interactions between Bungie and segments of the Destiny 2 player base. While the developer has faced criticism for various missteps over the years, some community reactions have reportedly escalated to severe harassment. Gafner himself has previously addressed instances of persistent abuse and threats directed at Bungie employees, which in 2022 led to a reduction in direct communications as the studio planned protective measures. This resulted in the creation of the anonymized Destiny 2 Team social media account. In 2023, Bungie secured a $500,000 legal victory against a player who engaged in harassment, yet the studio continued to report that developers faced continued harassment simply for their association with the game.

However, Gafner's message highlights that this negativity often represented a vocal minority. He acknowledged that the vast majority of players, even when expressing dissatisfaction with specific aspects of Destiny 2, did so with a foundation of respect and appreciation. "No matter the future, we will always have these memories," Gafner concluded. "Thank you. For everything."
