A dedicated modder is breathing new life into Destiny 2 by making content that was removed from the game by Bungie playable once more. In 2020, Bungie announced the "Sunset" or "Vaulting" of significant portions of Destiny 2's content, including story missions and areas players had purchased. This decision, while attributed to technical necessities, was met with community dissatisfaction.
Now, a fan tool known as the Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Singleplayer Exploration Mode is enabling players to revisit these vaulted locations. Developed by a user named Stanuwu, this tool operates on a version of Destiny 2 from before the content vaulting began. Gameplay videos showcasing exploration of areas like the Leviathan raid map have begun appearing online, indicating progress on the mod.
However, the mod comes with significant limitations. According to Stanuwu's GitHub page, the tool will not feature any in-game mechanics, enemies, or quests. Instead, its purpose is to serve as a virtual space for players to wander through and reminisce about past in-game locations. This offers a unique opportunity for fans to experience these inaccessible environments, especially as Sony has reportedly placed Destiny 2 on a reduced update cycle.
The prospect of revisiting these lost areas has resonated with the community, with one user commenting on a video of the Leviathan map expressing a desire to "cry bro."
