Destiny 2 players have been advised by Bungie's communications manager, Dylan Gafner, not to feel responsible for the cessation of new content development for the game. This statement comes roughly a month after Bungie announced it would conclude support for Destiny 2, a decision that surprised many in the community who anticipated continued investment in the title.
Gafner directly addressed fan speculation about whether more community support could have altered the game's trajectory. He affirmed that players had provided more than enough support for both the game and the studio over the past decade. "You all have done more for this game and our studio than could ever be imagined, and no words can accurately depict how lucky we are to have shared these worlds with you," Gafner stated. He added, "Don’t blame yourselves or think you could have / should have done more. This is just the way it goes sometimes. No matter the future, we will always have these memories."
Reports suggest that a Destiny 3 is not currently planned, and Bungie is anticipating significant layoffs. Some former employees have shared recollections of ambitious, unrealized concepts for the Destiny universe, including a dating simulator. While Bungie remains committed to its upcoming title Marathon, the future of the studio's capacity to develop another major AAA game is uncertain, particularly given the current economic climate in the games industry, which makes ambitious and costly projects more challenging to greenlight and sustain.
