Destiny 2 Unvaulting Details Emerge Amidst Continued Development Freeze

Despite the recent announcement of Destiny 2's development freeze and significant layoffs at Bungie, the studio is proceeding with its plan to "unvault" previously removed campaigns, raids, and destinations. New details from a Forbes report, citing internal sources, indicate that all of this returned content will be accessible to all players for free, regardless of whether they previously owned it.

While the campaigns, raids, and destinations are set to return, the live service seasons that accompanied them will not. This absence may lead to narrative gaps, as some of these seasons included story elements that set up future expansions. Similarly, seasonal events are not included in the unvaulting, partly because their associated weapons are already available within the game. The report suggests that cycling through seasonal events would require a live-ops team that no longer exists at Bungie.

Activities introduced during those seasons also appear unlikely to return, though Tassi has not ruled out the possibility of some being repurposed as standalone content. The report also notes that not every Strike, Crucible, or Gambit map is guaranteed to return, with Strikes possessing narrative connections being more likely candidates. This unvaulting does not signify a return to regular development for Destiny 2; no further patches are anticipated before the content's release, beyond those addressing critical bugs.

The unvaulting is tentatively expected sometime next year. In the interim, activity surrounding Destiny 2 is expected to remain minimal, with Bungie's focus shifting towards a significant update for its upcoming game, Marathon, anticipated in December.
