Deus Ex Mod Turns Immersive Sim Into Max Payne-Like Shooter

A new work-in-progress mod for the original Deus Ex is transforming the classic immersive sim into a game with mechanics reminiscent of the Max Payne series. The mod introduces a third-person perspective alongside new features like dual-wielding and shoot-dodging.

The mod, showcased by YouTuber dan2091, goes beyond a simple camera change. Videos demonstrate JC Denton wearing different outfits, allowing players to see their character's appearance. Bespoke ladder climbing animations and a new dual-wielding system are also featured, with the latter functioning in both first and third-person views.

Most notably, the mod equips JC Denton with Max Payne-style bullet dodging capabilities. This feature, along with the dual-wielding, adds a distinct action-oriented flair to the game's stealth and RPG elements. The animations for rolling and dodging appear to be directly borrowed from Remedy's earlier Max Payne titles, fitting surprisingly well with Deus Ex's gritty aesthetic.

While Deus Ex titles like Human Revolution and Mankind Divided incorporated limited third-person elements for cover and takedowns, this mod offers a complete shift in perspective. The original Deus Ex also used a shot/reverse shot camera during dialogue. Despite the appeal of experiencing the game from this new viewpoint, the future of the Deus Ex series itself appears uncertain. A new installment was reportedly canceled by Embracer Group, and the voice actor for Adam Jensen stated that the series would not return this year.
