Devolver Digital is set to launch Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed on November 19, a new 2D platformer that the publisher is playfully marketing as a competitor to Grand Theft Auto VI. The game comes from developer Doinksoft, known for titles like Gato Roboto and Gunbrella.
Despite its description as a "remaster of the second remake of the original monochrome action-platformer starring the most famous video game mascot of all time," Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed is an entirely original game. The original "Volvy's Adventure" does not exist, and its titular mascot, Volvy, while Devolver Digital's platformer character, is not the most famous of all time. Volvy is depicted as a rat-like creature with one large and one small hand.
Gameplay in Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed involves typical platformer mechanics such as dashing, jumping, and collecting items, in this case, onions. Players will also bounce on enemies and face bosses. A key mechanic allows Volvy to transform into an alternate form called Swolvy, granting him the ability to smash through obstacles.
The game adopts a vibrant, Game Boy Color-inspired aesthetic, complete with a dynamic soundtrack and fluid movement. Volvy's abilities include an aerial dash using his large fist, burrowing underground, and tail-assisted hovering, all of which can be chained together. The meta-commentary on the gaming industry is evident in the game's premise and marketing, but the core gameplay shown in the debut trailer appears to offer an engaging experience.
Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed is priced at $5 and is positioned as an alternative for players looking for something different on November 19, the same day Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release. GTA VI, an open-world crime simulator, will be a high-profile release, but it is priced at $80 or $100 and will not be available on PC at launch.
Interestingly, Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed is not the only title launching on November 19 that could be seen as counterprogramming to GTA VI. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ Online, which adds online co-op functionality, is also slated for release on the same date.
