Blizzard has confirmed that no further expansions are planned for Diablo 4. The development team is now fully focused on ongoing seasonal content for Diablo 4 and the upcoming Diablo 5, which is set a century after the events of Diablo 4. Diablo 5 itself is slated for a 2029 release, with the current game's narrative continuing through its seasonal updates.

Diablo game director Brent Gibson stated in an interview that the team has concluded the "Story of Hatred" with Mephisto and is now moving towards the "Story of Terror" as the overarching narrative theme. This shift sets the stage for Diablo 5, where Sanctuary has succumbed to the Lord of Terror. Gibson indicated that the decade-long gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5 offers considerable creative freedom to shape the intervening narrative and explore player reactions season to season.

Despite the cessation of planned expansions, Blizzard intends to continue supporting Diablo 4 for an extended period, drawing a parallel to the ongoing support for Diablo 2 Resurrected. The company emphasized its commitment to the entire Diablo universe, suggesting that Diablo 4 will remain a live service with continued updates, though the specific nature of this support remains to be detailed. Plans for Diablo 4's future content may evolve based on player feedback as development progresses towards Diablo 5.
