At this year's BlizzCon, CD Projekt Red and Blizzard Entertainment revealed upcoming collaborations that will bring elements of The Witcher and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners into Diablo 4 and Overwatch, respectively. Developers from both studios have now shared insights into the creative decisions behind these cross-game events.
The Witcher Collaboration in Diablo 4
The collaboration between The Witcher and Diablo 4 will feature a Geralt-themed skin for the Barbarian class. Miles Tost, CD Projekt Red's level design lead, explained that this choice involved considerable creative discussion. He noted that the Barbarian class aligns with Geralt's character through their mastery of weapons and physical prowess, with relatively low reliance on magic. Tost also drew a parallel between the Barbarian's arsenal system and the preparation a Witcher undertakes to find the right tools for a given task.
This Geralt-themed skin will be available in Diablo 4 for players who pre-order The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, through Battle.net. The expansion is slated for release in 2027, and CD Projekt Red has indicated that further elements of the Diablo 4 collaboration are planned for that year.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Crossover in Overwatch
Overwatch will receive cosmetics inspired by David and Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Amelia Korzycka, CD Projekt Red's community and social media manager, stated that the anime series was chosen over Cyberpunk 2077 for this initial collaboration due to several factors. The upcoming release of Edgerunners 2, coupled with frequent community requests on social media for an Overwatch crossover with the anime, made it a more fitting choice for the present.
"Edgerunners, I think, fits a bit better for now," Korzycka said. "We will see what the future holds, but we want to start with Edgerunners, especially [because] Edgerunners 2 is almost here, right?"
Both Korzycka and Andrew Guerrero, Blizzard's product VP, suggested that a collaboration with Cyberpunk 2077 itself remains a possibility for the future. Guerrero added that positive player reception to the Edgerunners collaboration could lead to further initiatives. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 20, with the Overwatch collaboration expected to launch next year.
