Diablo 4 Season 16 Overhauls War Plans System with New Tactics and Boons

Diablo 4's War Plans system is receiving a substantial upgrade in Season 16, introducing new mechanics that grant players more agency over their endgame pursuits and the rewards they receive. Originally implemented as part of the game's second expansion, Lord of Hatred, War Plans allowed players to curate a selection of endgame activities and improve their reward potential through a dedicated skill tree. However, the system offered limited control over activity selection and infrequent rerolls.

The upcoming Season 16 will introduce War Plans Tactics, a meta-progression system designed to address these limitations. By engaging in War Plan activities, players will earn points to invest in a new tactics tree. This investment will allow them to influence the likelihood of specific activities appearing and increase the drop rate of desired reward types. Furthermore, the rerolling process for War Plans is being revised with a new currency, Marks of Wisdom, which will cap at 20 and is intended to facilitate more frequent rerolls.

According to Blizzard, players will be able to allocate up to three points to individual endgame activities and an additional three points to different reward categories. "Earn points from completing War Plans activities, then invest these points into nodes to increase the chance of preferred activities or rewards appearing," Blizzard stated. "This allows you to tailor your War Plans more closely with both your goals and playstyle." Investing points into Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons, for instance, will grant increased chances for Greater Helltides and Escalation Nightmare Dungeons, respectively. On the reward front, players can adjust probabilities for earning armor, weapons, jewelry, Obducite, salvage, gems, gold, activity keys, Horadric Cube materials, or Talisman items.

Beyond the War Plans Tactics, Season 16 will also feature a new seasonal War Plans tree called Tyrael's Boons. This tree will consist of four distinct paths, each offering six nodes from which players can select up to four. The paths include Curious Addition, which enhances the Purveyor of Curiosities for better item acquisition; Merchant of Mystery, introducing a new merchant on Torment difficulties selling item caches for Forgotten Souls; Scent of Gold, boosting gold, experience, and material gains; and Trash for Treasure, which lowers transmuting costs, improves chances for Obducite and salvage, and may even unlock a new Horadric Cube recipe for upgrading a Tempered Affix to a Greater Affix.

In addition to the War Plans enhancements, Season 16 will introduce a new gear type: Horadric legendaries. These legendaries are designed to synergize with specific Talisman charms, with Horadric legendary jewelry items contributing to Talisman set bonuses. This addition is expected to foster diverse endgame build possibilities through new set and charm combinations.

Diablo 4 Season 16 is scheduled to be available on the public test realm starting October 27, with the PTR phase concluding on November 3. The full season is slated to launch on December 1. Looking ahead, Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 will receive a new class, the Amazon, in the first half of next year, though no further expansions are planned. The next installment in the franchise, Diablo 5, is targeted for a 2029 release and is expected to feature more classes at launch than any previous Diablo title.
