Diablo 5 will build upon the series' signature fast-paced combat, aiming to make gameplay even more visceral and action-forward. Executive producer Matt Zitterman stated at BlizzCon 2026 that while the core isometric action-RPG identity will remain, Blizzard intends to significantly improve and evolve existing mechanics. This focus on enhancing combat continues the trajectory seen from Diablo 3 through Diablo 4.
Zitterman also emphasized a design philosophy centered on appealing to the entire Diablo fanbase. "Something we talk about a lot on the team is we want Diablo 5 to be a game that feels like it has elements for you, regardless of which Diablo game was your favorite," he explained. To achieve this, the development team is drawing inspiration from across the franchise's history, incorporating successful elements from Diablo 2, Diablo 3, and Diablo 4. This approach to itemization, for instance, will see inspiration taken from Diablo 2, while continuing to build on successes from Diablo 4.
The narrative premise for Diablo 5 is set decades after the Lord of Terror's conquest of Sanctuary. In this grim future, players are on the move with a caravan of survivors, seeking refuge and recruiting allies. The game will also introduce more character classes than previous installments, including the Monk, Demon Hunter, and a new class called the Plague Knight, which utilizes disease and pestilence in combat. Diablo 5 is slated for release in 2029.
